Amery Hospital & Clinic Joins Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program

Feburary 14, 2017

AMERY, Wisc. - Amery Hospital & Clinic received certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP), an international program administered by Audubon International designed to help landowners preserve and enhance the environmental quality of their property. Luke Wittkop, Groundskeeper, recognized for his effort in planning for environmental stewardship, developed the plan.

According to Wittkop, when Amery Hospital & Clinic constructed the building in 2007, a large percentage of the grounds was designed with environmental and sustainable landscaping. Of the 28-acre campus, 17 acres was set aside for wildlife habitat and natural areas, including five acres of native prairie rain gardens and eight acres of natural woodland along the Apple River.

“In addition to the natural landscaping, Amery Hospital & Clinic is also very mindful of water and energy conservation, recycling, and being good stewards of our resources and environment,” stated Wittkop. “Being a part of the Audubon program and being a certified Monarch Waystation, which conserves and protects monarch habitats, shows our commitment to preserving our environment.”

"The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program gives people an opportunity to do something good for the environment right where they live, work, and recreate" explained Tara Donadio, Director of Cooperative Sanctuary Programs for Audubon International. "We welcome Amery Hospital & Clinic’s commitment to managing the property in an environmentally-sensitive manner."

By joining and participating in the ACSP, Amery Hospital & Clinic will be involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community. These projects may include: placing nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds such as bluebirds and swallows, utilizing integrated pest management techniques, conserving water, and maintaining food and cover for wildlife.

"The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program benefits both people and wildlife," said Donadio. "It's a great way for businesses and environmental organizations to work together to become better stewards of the land and natural resources."
