State-of-the-art training keeps the Wound Healing Center at the forefront

ARMC employee completes highly specialized course

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, medical knowledge doubles every two years. Mary Radtke, who serves as a Registered Nurse at the Wound Healing Center, a National Healing managed wound center and a division of Amery Regional Medical Center, recently completed a nearly 50-hour advanced study program on underlying reasons for persistent wounds and the latest technologies and treatments available for chronic wounds today.

The ARMC employee attended the National Healing Institute in Columbus, Ohio and fulfilled all requirements in "Principles of Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine," which is accredited for physicians and nurses and approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society and the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology.

Working alongside peers from around the country, Radtke reviewed highly specialized treatments including bio-engineered skin substitutes, growth factor therapies, active and passive dressings and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Located at 230 Deronda Street in Amery, the Wound Healing Center offers advanced therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in which patients are surrounded with 100 percent oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. This increases the amount of oxygen in the blood to promote healing from the inside out.

Likely candidates for treatment are those suffering from diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, radiation injuries, venous leg ulcers, arterial/ischemic ulcerations, and wounds that haven't healed within 30 days.

During the course, Radtke also gained knowledge of how hyperbaric oxygen therapies can treat such uncommon ailments as cyanide poisoning, gangrene, carbon monoxide poisoning, crush injuries and the “bends” or decompression sickness.

The National Healing Institute is presented by Florida-based National Healing Corporation, which accounts for nearly 30 percent of the nation's managed wound healing centers and holds a Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care Certification for wound care.

The Wound Healing Center in Amery benefits from the company's commitment to research to keep it on the leading edge of health care. The Wound Healing Center also has access to a Dermopathology Service for the most challenging cases in which expert pathologists at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in Florida utilize advanced diagnostic techniques to provide a rapid diagnosis.
