 | A Certified Nurse Midwife is a highly trained and skilled professional who empowers women in their healthcare. Midwives are known for providing quality care before, during and after pregnancy. We encourage women and their families to actively participate in the pregnancy and delivery, helping to ease the transition of the newborn into the family’s life. In addition, midwives provide a full range of services throughout a woman’s life, including physicals, pap smears, birth control counseling and colposcopies.
Brenda Johnson, Certified Nurse Midwife, provides a full range of women’s health and nurse midwifery services at Amery Regional Medical Center and the Luck Medical Clinic.
SERVICES INCLUDE:
- Prenatal Care
- Labor & Delivery
- Availability of a general surgeon or OB/GYN if a cesarean birth is needed
- Collaboration with Amery Regional Medical Center’s family practice physicians
- Breastfeeding support and education
- Newborn care
- Gynecology care for well women and teens, including family planning and annual exams
- Care for women during menopause
Today’s Certified Nurse Midwife
For as long as women have had babies, there have been special women who have cared for them at the time of their labor and delivery. These midwifes served a special need in their community. Nurse Midwifery was born in the 1930s and served the obstetric and general health needs of their community. In the 1970s, nurse midwifery education programs became more popular and today there are 50 such programs in the country.
Today’s certified nurse midwife carries on this tradition of personal, family-centered, compassionate care. In addition, today’s nurse midwife is a highly skilled healthcare professional who can draw on the vast resources of modern medicine to give women the best care possible.
Although they independently manage the care of relatively healthy women and newborns, every nurse midwife is affiliated with a physician, who is available for consultation or referral as needed. |
